Murray Basin Freight Project

The upgrade to the existing broad gauge rail lines is urgently required to enhance reliability, speed and efficiency to and from ports and to reduce road congestion and conflict with urban vehicles. This project is supported by work undertaken by the Central Murray Regional Transport Forum.
The State Government has invested $30 million towards stage one of the project which involves a package of essential maintenance works of the Mildura freight line, between Yelta and Maryborough.

Works will commence mid-2015 and be completed in 2016 these works will:

  • ensure the operational capacity of the Mildura line
  • maintain rail access to the intermodal terminals at Merbein and Donald
  • enable the continued bulk grain transport to the ports of Geelong and Melbourne.

The Loddon Mallee RDA is seeking further funding to complete the standardisation of the freight rail links between Yelta and Victoria’s ports. A study of the route options was conducted by GHD for the Department of Transport Planning and Local Infrastructure in 2014.
Of the options presented in this report, the Central Murray Regional Transport Forum has unanimously supported Option 4 with the addition of the Ouyen to Murrayville line being included for standardisation and upgrade. The Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources is now undertaking a business case for the works. This is expected in the first half of 2015.
